Every year a large number of people from the Tengar tribe gather at Mount Bromo to take part in the festival. These tribes consider themselves Hindus and worship Ganesha. To please the gods, these people offer offerings in volcanic holes during puja.

Grains, vegetables, animals and birds and other food items are kept in the crater. To appease the evil spirits, they give meat and rice. When people offer prasad in a volcano, they also try to catch it through big nets. It is believed that by worshiping Ganesha located here and offering fruits and vegetables to the volcano, it does not explode and they remain safe.

About one million people of the Tengar tribe live in 30 villages around Bromo Mount. These people identify themselves as Hindus. The Tengar tribes claim to be the descendants of the Majapahit princes of the last Indian dynasty to rule Indonesia. Even today, these people spend most of their lives only in forests, animals, birds, fruits and vegetables.

Apart from Hinduism, the Tengars also follow Buddhism and other local religions. Like the people of Bali, they also worship Ida Sang Hyang Uidi Bhasa (Almighty God) besides Hindu and Buddhist deities. They worship the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh and Buddha.
