The central government is going to start the Rs 1,200 crore project at Janskar, the northernmost tip of the country, Nubra Valley and Kargil area.  The National Power Grid will be constructed here under this project.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has plans to make Ladak carbon neutral.  Under this, the first building block is going to be constructed here.  After this plan, the power problem in Ladak will end.

Energy Minister Raj Kumar Singh said, 'We are expanding the Srinagar-Leh transmission line to provide electricity to Nubra and Janskar.  REC (formerly Rural Electrification Corporation) has been asked to implement the project.  This will enable regular electricity supply for the people living in these areas and end their dependence on diesel generators.

Work will start from Dras and Fiang, will be completed within 36 months
The project envisages laying two 220 kV lines in some of the world's highest mountains and inaccessible areas.  The 200-km scope will start from Dras.  Dras is the second coldest region in the world and is about 50 km from Kargil.  Another line will be started from Phiang for the Nubra block headquarters district near Leh, 120 km to the north.  It will be built at Khardung La, the highest motorable pass in the world at 18,380 feet.  Depending on the weather conditions, the work of both the lines will be completed in 24-36 months.

Nubra is a popular tourist destination
Nubra is a popular tourist destination.  It is located near the Siachen Glacier in the West along Baltistan in POK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir).  It is the highest battleground in the North of the world while the Chan-Chenmo Range is to the east.  Historically, it connected India with the southern branch of the old silk route from China via the Karakoram Pass.

Employment will get a boost, generator will stop running
The Minister informed that the supply of electricity will promote local economic activities and generate employment through winter tourism.  The environment will also be relieved from carbon emissions from diesel generators used to supply electricity for about 5 hours in the evening.
