An attack on a convoy of a Canadian mining company personnel in Burkina Faso killed 37 people.  It is the deadliest terrorist attack in the last nearly 5 years in the West African country.  Saidou Sanou, Governor of the East Region of the country, said that unidentified armed people ambushed and attacked 5 buses in which the local workers of the Semafo Mining Company, the contractors were on board.

Confirming the death of 37 people in the attack, he said that at least 37 people were killed and 60 others were injured in the attack.  The owner of the mining company Semafo Inc. said that 5 buses being taken under the protection of the army were attacked when they were about 40 km from the Bongou gold mine in Tapoa province.  Security sources said that an army vehicle running behind the convoy was hit by explosives.

There were also reports of firing on 2 buses
Sources said on the condition of confidentiality that 2 buses carrying the personnel were subsequently fired.  Burkina Faso's government said that the security forces have started rescue and search operations.  This is the third fatal attack on Semafo in the last 15 months.

"We are actively working with the authorities at all levels to ensure the safety of our personnel, contractors and suppliers," Semafo said in a statement. There has been an atmosphere of tension in the area since the incident.  Attacks on mineworkers in Burkina Faso have happened many times before.
