BJP workers clashed with police in a demonstration held on Wednesday against the increase in electricity rates in West Bengal, injuring several saffron party workers in the incident.

Sources said that BJP President Amit Shah and State BJP President Dilip Ghosh were informed about this.  Ghosh is currently in Delhi to attend the organization meeting.  Shah has asked the state leadership to provide him detailed information about the incident.  The Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party organized protests against rising electricity prices.  During this time, he had a clash with the police.

Apart from Bharatiya Janata Party state general secretaries Sayantan Basu and Raju Banerjee, top leaders of the state unit participated in the protest.  Mahila Morcha state president and MP Lockett Chatterjee also participated in the demonstration.  Kolkata Police tried to stop them by putting barricades on Central Avenue.  Police claimed that BJP workers pelted stones at police.

Police released tear gas shells and splashed water to disperse the crowd.  The police also charged lathi.  The BJP claimed that Basu, Banerjee, BJP Yuva Morcha state president Debjit Sarkar and hundreds of party workers were arrested.  The party claimed that 85 of its workers were injured and many of them were hospitalized.
