One of the leading petitioners in the triple talaq case Ishrat Jahan tied a rakhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday and thanked the Muslim sisters for making this illusion illegal.  Jahan tied a tricolor rakhi to the Prime Minister in Delhi and said that he was 'happy' to get this opportunity.  However, Jahan felt sad that she could not give the rasgulla box to the PM.

Jahan said, 'On behalf of all my Muslim sisters, I thanked the Prime Minister for making the practice of triple talaq illegal at once.  The Prime Minister in his reply said that it is our right and we should get it.  President Ram Nath Kovind gave his approval on August 1 to enact the Muslim Women (Protection of Marriage Rights) Bill, 2019, passed by Parliament.  Under this, three divorces were declared illegal through oral, written, SMS or WhatsApp or any other electronic chat.

However, Jahan regretted that she could not give the 'Rasgulla' box she took with her to the Prime Minister.  She said, 'For security reasons, I could not give him the rasgulla that I had brought from Kolkata.  However, I am happy that I got the an opportunity to tie a rakhi to the PM."

Jahan is one of the five petitioners against triple talaq at the Supreme Court.  She hails from Howrah district in West Bengal and is the mother of a 14-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter.
