Pentagon's top officer Pat Shenyarn arrived in Afghanistan on Monday to meet American commanders and Afghan leaders. This tour is happening at a time when efforts to increase peace talks with the Taliban are intense. Pat Shanahan, who was recently appointed Acting Defense Minister, said that he has not been given any order regarding reducing the number of soldiers. However, officials say that this demand is in the list of demands for peace talks with the Taliban.
Shanahan said that he is happy with the fact that the administration of President Donald Trump is exploring all possibilities to end the war for the last 17 years. He emphasized that the decision on peace conditions in Afghanistan is yet to be decided. Significantly, the Taliban have refused to interact with President Asraf Ghani's government as illegal, but Washington is trying to end the deadlock.
Shanhan told journalists traveling with him from Washington, "The people of Afghanistan have to decide what Afghanistan looks like. It is not about the United States of Afghanistan. "The special envoy of the administration for peace talks in Afghanistan, Jalme Khaliljad, had said on Friday that the talks are at the beginning stage and they are expected to get the agreement by July when the general elections are scheduled to be held.
