About 10 lakh employees of different banks, including private sector banks, have withdrawn the call for a one-day strike on December 26 against Vijaya Bank and Bank of Baroda in connection with the proposed merger. Earlier on Friday, the union of public sector banks officials had called for a strike against demands for meeting these demands and salary negotiations.
In September, the government had announced the merger of Public Sector Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank in Bank of Baroda under the Reserve Bank's Quick Correctional Action Framework (PCA) framework. This will bring the country's third largest bank into existence.
United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) said that the merger is not in the interest of the bank or bank customers. In fact, both of them will be harmed. UFBU 9 is the organization of bank unions. This includes All India Bank Officers Confederation, All India Bank Employees Association and National Organization of Bank Workers etc.
Unions claim that the government wants to increase the size of the banks through mergers, but if all the public sector banks are also merged together, the entity which came into existence after the merger will not get place in the top 10 banks of the world. The rally will be taken up by the unions on December 26 and protests will be held in Azad Maidan in South Mumbai.
