US warned to back off from making efforts to weaken the democratic process in Maldives

The United States warned against any attempt to weaken the democratic process in the Maldives, saying that it would take appropriate steps against such a move. A senior diplomat, who went on a visit to the Maldives, was warned during a meeting with leaders and officials here on Wednesday.

After challenging the results of the elections in the Supreme Court by the outgoing President Abdullah Yameen of the Maldives, a US State Department spokesman said, "America and its allies see an endeavor to weaken the democratic process with deep concern. It is important that the people of Maldives should be respected and maintained.
The spokesman said, "We had said before the elections that the United States that will take action against any person who would obstruct the democratic process, law or free and fair elections."
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Alice Wells , on Tuesday was in Maldives, where she met the current government officials, elected president and other leaders of the Maldives.
